What skills do you need to be an effective real estate agent? You need to be an independent worker, of course, as much of what you do is out in the field. You need to be willing to work odd hours, on weekends, and generally adapt to what your clients need from you. Also, understanding the real estate market is essential, and you need to have a skill for tracking down the right property based on your clients’ requests.
All of what is mentioned in the previous paragraph is needed for a career in real estate, but there is something else you should consider – emotional intelligence. Your EQ can go a long way toward determining how well you will be able to serve your clients.
Be a Helpful Mentor
The home buying process is a stressful one, as there are many moving parts to consider for those making the purchase. Adding to that stress can be the fact that many buyers don’t agree amongst themselves on what they want to purchase. For instance, one half of a married couple may want an old, traditional home, while the other wants something modern and up-to-date. You may not be a marriage counselor, but you could wind up playing one in some form when situations like this come up. By reading the emotions of those involved and offering helpful advice, you could help the couple come to an agreement and settle on a house that pleases everyone equally.
Keep Yourself Going
Emotional intelligence doesn’t apply only to those you are working with, but to yourself, as well. You need to manage your own emotions and mood in order to be at your best when your clients need you most. Understanding your emotional swings and learning to deal with them effectively could make you a better agent in short order. Since your clients are making such a big decision in their lives, they need to be able to turn to you for support and assurance. That can only be offered if you have yourself in a good place to start with.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Reading the situation that you are in can help greatly when trying to close deals. Many people are nice by default – in fact, they may be too nice for their own good. So, they might be saying one thing, while thinking something else. They don’t want to say that something else, because it may upset someone, but it’s still stuck in the back of their mind. When you can read people effectively and understand that they may be struggling with something that hasn’t been said, it’s possible that you’ll break through that wall and get down to the heart of the matter.
As part of your constant development as a real estate agent, consider working on your emotional intelligence. That might not be the first thing that comes to mind as part of your business aspirations, but it really can take you a long way. If you are able to advance your EQ and become better at working with a variety of people, your appeal as an agent will be expanded.
